The Closing of the Expo
It is a quiet end to a six-month world exposition in Shanghai that saw more than 70 million people visit. On a balmy All Hallow’s Eve, the mainly Chinese visitors to the 2010 Shanghai World Expo were still trickling through the entrance gates even as the sun was setting. A lone accordion player performed a few somber songs in front of the Estonia, Latvia and Denmark pavilions. But had it not been for the closing ceremony that took place inside the Culture Center, the Oct. 31 final day of the Expo would have just looked like another day at the park. © China/files
Grand Introduction for Irish Harpists
From Oct. 26 – 29, visitors to the Ireland pavilion enjoyed evening performances from the Windsong harpists, a six-member female group of Irish harpists from the Windsong Music School. The Ireland pavilion performances featured some of the youngest musicians aboard playing inside the Expo during the six-month event. © China/files
When No Driver is Needed
For the past three months, driverless vans have traveled more than 13,000 kilometers and across two continents, trekking from Parma, Italy to Shanghai, arriving in China for the final days of the world exposition. What made these vehicles special was that they were driverless automobiles, or cars that were not being driven by a person, but instead fully automated, non-polluting cars arriving at their final destination. The experiment is part of growing research currently being conducted by the European Research Council. © China/files
EU-China Aeronautics Initiatives Takeoff
Representatives from the European Union and China unveiled a package of joint initiatives and coordinated projects in aeronautics, the first research initiative fully funded by both governments aimed at combating increased demand in transport and working toward more sustainable technologies in air travel over the coming decades, at a recent Oct. 28 press conference inside the Aviation pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. The initiatives will see the EU and China collaborate on developing the process behind casting large titanium structures to reduce the amount of waste produced during the manufacturing process of aircraft, and adjustments to the flow and drag of aircraft to help lower emissions in the next few years. © China/files

Cities as part of their region
Seminar Regional Development: best practices October 19th in Shanghai Expo Europe's cities are its centres of economic activity, innovation and employment, yet they face a number of challenges. Cities symbolise the twofold challenge currently facing the European Union: how to improve competitiveness while meeting social and environmental demands. The trend to suburbanisation, the concentration of deprivation and unemployment in urban neighbourhoods, increasing congestion – complex problems such as these require integrated answers in transport, housing, and training and employment schemes, which must be tailored to local needs. European regional and cohesion policies and funds address these challenges. The EU organised a seminar to exchange best practices in the field of regional development (regional governance and innovation and sustainable urban development). © China/files

After seeing Zhou painting the Estonia pavilion several weeks ago, the European Union/Belgium joint pavilion staff organized a one-day event that brought every completed work Zhou has done of the EU member state pavilions and displayed them inside the pavilion for a select group of visitors, pavilion directors and journalists, with the aim of promoting European unity in the final weeks of the Expo. © China/files

Poland’s Dragon Lady
A child stares up at the wall, his eyes widened at the gigantic digital dragon talking to him. He doesn’t answer. “Can you tell me where Poland is located?” the voice asks. The boy turns around smiling, and runs back to his parents. Other children take turns walking up to the dragon that shimmers across the walls inside the Poland pavilion at the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. Sitting upstairs in a separate booth, Layla Iwan holds a joystick controlling the movements of the digital dragon, and on a separate computer monitor watches as people move through the exhibition space. She leans forward to the microphone and begins talking to a new group of visitors. Wearing headphones, she is even able to hear if they respond to her questions. © China/files

A burst of air has just hit him, and he’s propelled to the top of the building. The crowd ogles at the stunt. Gliding back down, the 19-year-old Latvian is joined by Arturs Karsenieks, and the two take turns launching themselves up toward the roof, a daring stunt considering the tube they’re encased in is only about three meters in diameter.
