• Ensuring food security Soaring food prices have led to greater poverty, hunger and malnutrition across the developing world, especially in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. The EU responded in December 2008 by approving the €1 billion Food Facility which can react rapidly when food security is threatened.
  • Water for the world Water supply and sanitation are critical issues for the global population. In the developing world, millions die each year from diseases related to unsafe water, while in Europe, coordinated policies are needed to address flooding and drought.
  • Leading the way in development European Union development aid has one primary objective in mind: to eradicate poverty in the world. The EU provides over half of global development aid, and efforts centre on the Millennium Development Goals, which were agreed by world leaders in 2000.
  • Global solidarity in times of crisis The European Union is one of the world’s largest humanitarian aid donors. Its humanitarian aid policy provides one of the clearest examples of the European Union in action and is a flagship for our fundamental values: solidarity, respect for human dignity, equality, tolerance and personal commitment.
